{"id":59,"date":"2017-07-01T11:37:34","date_gmt":"2017-07-01T11:37:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/?page_id=59"},"modified":"2019-02-05T13:02:40","modified_gmt":"2019-02-05T13:02:40","slug":"at-school","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/at-school\/","title":{"rendered":"At School"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In 1971, aged 8, I went to Eltham College, an English Public School, reknowned for its academic leanings, where I was a dayboy for ten years.&nbsp; I won 1st prize in the annual Reading and Speech Competition, in my age group, seven times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/aliceprog-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/aliceprog-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/aliceprog.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 85vw, 240px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/alicepic-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>From the outset, I took part in annual school plays, and in the Shakespearean tradition played the girls &#8211; including playing a princess in &#8220;<strong>The Charcoal Burner&#8217;s Son<\/strong>&#8220;, in 1973, and <strong>Alice<\/strong>, in her adventures, in 1974, and in a Sixth Form Review I played &#8220;Tina&#8221; in Joe Orton&#8217;s &#8220;<strong>Funeral Games<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"221\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/riiprog-221x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/riiprog-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/riiprog.jpg 270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 221px) 85vw, 221px\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"276\" height=\"233\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/riipic.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-222\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/rjpic-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-221\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In the main school I at first played only small roles in the annual school plays &#8211; in Giles Cooper&#8217;s &#8220;<strong>Unman, Wittering and Zigo<\/strong>&#8220;, Aumerle in Shakespeare&#8217;s &#8220;<strong>Richard II<\/strong>&#8221; in 1977, Benvolio in &#8220;<strong>Romeo and Juliet<\/strong>&#8220;, and the &#8216;boy&#8217; in the French farce, &#8220;<strong>The Italian Straw Hat<\/strong>&#8221; by Eugene Labiche.<br><br><br><br><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/sheridanpic2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-232\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/sheridanpic1-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-231\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In March 1979, aged 16, &#8216;O&#8217; Levels behind me, I played Joseph Surface in Sheridan&#8217;s &#8220;<strong>School for Scandal<\/strong>&#8220;, directed by then Head of English, Anthony Barnard, in the gym\/theatre space at the school.
