On Millennium night, I ‘held the West’, marshalling the hundreds of people who saw in the new year on Glastonbury Tor on and off the rather muddy hill. My (late) friend Howie ‘held the East’. The event was set up by Serena Roney-Dougal and Jan Oakley, and lit up the hill with hundreds of flares. The most enjoyable part of my role was to entertain the crowds up and down the Tor as they queued to get through the narrow muddy stile at the Western foot of the Tor, once the Millennium had been seen in. Many of the locals (both Somerset and ‘alternative’) recognised me, enjoying the cheeky, friendly character who kept peoples’ spirits up as they waited to get back to the pub…
