{"id":98,"date":"2011-01-16T09:55:37","date_gmt":"2011-01-16T09:55:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kreps.org\/academic\/?p=98"},"modified":"2023-05-27T09:27:04","modified_gmt":"2023-05-27T09:27:04","slug":"meccsa2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kreps.org\/academic\/meccsa2011\/","title":{"rendered":"Socialmedia and Transnational Capitalism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-104 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/academic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/meccsa-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"meccsa\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>David presented a paper at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meccsa.org.uk\">MeCCSA<\/a> in Salford, Greater Manchester, UK, entitled in January 2011.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract<\/strong>:\u00a0<span class=\"s5\">Social Networking Sites (SNS) have become a key component of users\u2019 experience<\/span><span class=\"s5\">, not just<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u00a0of Web 2.0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u00a0but of the growing non-web experience of the internet represented by the \u2018app\u2019 revolution<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. \u00a0Whilst much has been made of the social dynamics of online SNS, the influence of the structures and operations of these sites\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2013 and the business models behind them &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">on users is rarely accounted for. \u00a0This\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">pap<\/span><span class=\"s5\">er argues that behind the social behaviours supported by SNS, there is a growing shift towards viewing online communities as commodities, and SNS as an extension of mainstream capitalist ideologies fostered by existing patterns of commercialization and consumption.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u00a0Further, the \u2018open, free web\u2019 of yesteryear is increasingly being replaced in the daily usage of social networkers by walled garden apps with a clearer, more straightforward business model.<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u00a0Using the works of Gramsci<\/span><span class=\"s5\">,<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">Althusser\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">and Gill to provide a critical grounding, this\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">pap<\/span><span class=\"s5\">er will explore the popular SNS site \u2018Facebook\u2019\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">and access to it through the popular iPhone app on the Apple mobile OS<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. \u00a0In doing so, it argues that offline capitalist ideology is achieving hegemony in online social spaces by appropriating and absorbing existing notions of online \u2018friendship\u2019 and community, and repackaging and reselling them back as part of everyday life in a technological, capitalistic society. \u00a0SNS may feel to the users to be free, social, personal, but in fact SNS are business as usual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ref<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"ref\">Kreps, D (2011) \u2018Socialmedia and Transnational Capitalism\u2019.
