Heather Brunskell-Evans spoke about ‘The Performance of Women\u2019s Sexual Liberation’ and David\u00a0spoke about ‘Performing the Discourse of Sexuality Online’. \u00a0The discussant\u00a0was\u00a0Karen Boyle.<\/p>\n

Abstract<\/strong>:\u00a0This presentation\u00a0critically examines the pro- and\u00a0anti-pornography dichotomy from a global perspective. \u00a0Identifying an orientalism at the heart of Foucault\u2019s\u00a0Sexuality,\u00a0it suggests the prevalent critical approach to understanding sexualities is located within the neoliberal West. It argues that countries in the non-West are developing new senses of modesty and moral high-ground as part of a post-colonial distancing\u00a0from the imperial powers.\u00a0The proliferation of sexual discourse identified by Foucault, and the performativity of gender identities outlined by Butler, are both visible in the niche roles exemplified by sites like Fitlads.net, where young gay men share pornographic videos of themselves fetishizing football kit.\u00a0Such online sexual social networking including explicit video-sharing suggests\u00a0that pornography has been disrupted as an industry by the web just\u00a0like other\u00a0industries.\u00a0But\u00a0is\u00a0this proliferation of amateur pornography across the\u00a0internet\u00a0also\u00a0globalising the above Western approaches to sexual identity and its representation?\u00a0\u00a0The most visible symptom, perhaps, of\u00a0Foucault\u2019s orientalism and the new moral high-ground of the non-West\u00a0is in the polarisation\u00a0of views on homosexuality, presenting us with a\u00a0West where it has never been so widely accepted, and a non-West where it has never been so widely proscribed.<\/p>\n
