In June '94 we performed a two-man devised musictheatre piece in the late 14th century Dartington Great Hall, telling the life-stories of the men who built it, and the mythology of Richard II's emblem, which adorns the Hall.

John Holand, (half-brother to King Richard II).

The story of John Holland for whom Dartington Hall was built in the early 1390's, and the political, religious, and social upheaval of the era, told in clear and evocative imagery, in a moving and sometimes very personal piece, using a mixture of original text and passages from Holinshed and other contemporary historians.

The spiritual and psychological issues raised by the subject material, and the long term historical impact of the events described, were seen both in context and through the personal recollections and confidences of the actor, David Kreps.

Performance Research

Through this project the Company gained a new depth and breadth of understanding of the experimental devising process, giving the partnership simultaneous experience as both directors and participants in the process.
