Tibetan Buddhism is a form of Mahayana and very strong here. \u00a0 Mahayana Buddhism includes many boddhisatvas along with the teachings of the Buddhas, and their own many and varied guides to the Way. Very strong here at Kopan is the Boddhisatva Avalokiteshvara, whose specialisation is compassion.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1817\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1817\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7346-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1817 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7346-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"At the Sleeping Vishnu\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7346-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7346-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7346-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7346-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7346-1200x1600.jpg 1200w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7346-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 85vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1817\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At the Sleeping Vishnu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We then go to the Sleeping Vishnu &#8211; the Buddhanilthankah Temple. \u00a0This 7th century carving from a single slab of basalt rock is sacred to the Buddhists, too, as an emanation of Avolkiteshvara. \u00a0Completing a trinity of sanctity, this statue is also regarded by the Shaivites as the emanation of Shiva known as Nilakanta Shiva. \u00a0Young boys trained at the Temple monastery preside here, chanting, and placing tika on foreheads and garlands of flowers around necks. \u00a0I am very touched by the whole experience, despite the long queue! \u00a0The chanting here is quite mesmerising, and learning it from my guide, I repeat the mantra as I pay homage to the shrine.<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-1823-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sleeping-Vishnu.m4a?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sleeping-Vishnu.m4a\">http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sleeping-Vishnu.m4a<\/a><\/audio>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1816\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1816\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7366-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1816 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7366-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Lama at Triten Norbutse Bonpo Monastery\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7366-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7366-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7366-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7366-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7366-1200x1600.jpg 1200w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7366-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 85vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1816\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lama at Triten Norbutse Bonpo Monastery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thirdly we climb up into the hills again for our second Buddhist Temple of the day, this time the Triten Norbutse Bonpo Monastery. \u00a0Bonpo is one of the lesser known schools of Buddhism, with its stronghold in the West of Nepal, rather than in Kathmandu, but there are 280 monks here, and I met a lama &#8211; equally unique &#8211; and huge mandalas painted directly onto the ceiling.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1813\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1813\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7393-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1813\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7393-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Huge painted mandalas on the ceiling\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7393-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7393-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7393-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7393-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7393-1200x1600.jpg 1200w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7393-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1813\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Huge painted mandalas on the ceiling<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lastly, we pass through Kathmandu Durbar Square, the medieval royal heart of the city, with its 15th and 16th century pagodas, and its early 20th century neo-classical dictatorship palace. \u00a0Most interesting, for me, is the <a href=\"https:\/\/nepalsocialtreks.com\/who-is-kaal-bhairav-story-and-worship-rituals\/\">Kaal Bhairav <\/a>&#8211;
