{"id":61,"date":"2017-07-01T11:39:06","date_gmt":"2017-07-01T11:39:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/?page_id=61"},"modified":"2018-12-07T17:42:06","modified_gmt":"2018-12-07T17:42:06","slug":"amateur-theatre","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/amateur-theatre\/","title":{"rendered":"Amateur Theatre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Parallel with school productions, I was involved in youth drama, and, through an introduction made by Anthony Barnard, I began to take roles in plays at local amateur &#8216;little theatres&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h4>National Youth Theatre of Great Britain<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-212\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nyttxt1-300x59.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"59\" \/>In August 1980, one of a 400 intake from several thousand applicants that year, I took part in a Senior course with the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain, and played George Frith in Don Taylor&#8217;s &#8220;<b>The Roses of Eyam<\/b>&#8221; at the Jeanatta Cochrane Theatre, Holborn, near London&#8217;s West End.<\/p>\n<h4>Churchill Theatre Youth Section<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-138\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/cytpic-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/cytpic-240x300.jpg 240w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/cytpic.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 85vw, 240px\" \/>One local drama teacher who led some of the sessions for the <a href=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/?page_id=38\">CTYS<\/a>, Lynne Noble, also wrote a pantomime, performed at the Churchill Theatre, in which I played a policeman, in February 1980.<\/p>\n<h4>Little Theatres<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-127\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bennettpic-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bennettpic-224x300.jpg 224w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bennettpic.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 85vw, 224px\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-129\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bennettprog-166x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"166\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bennettprog-166x300.jpg 166w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bennettprog.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 166px) 85vw, 166px\" \/>In December 1975, aged 12, I played Tupper, in Alan Bennett&#8217;s &#8220;<b>40 Years On<\/b>&#8221; directed by Alan Dodds, at the Crayford Geoffery Whitworth Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Dilks, who took part in &#8220;40 Years On&#8221;, introduced me to the Bromley Little Theatre Company. The Bromley Little is an intimate, thriving little place where I was to perform in no less than seven shows over the next few years.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In November 1980, I played Tybalt in Shakespeare&#8217;s &#8220;<b>Romeo and Juliet<\/b>&#8220;, directed by Jeffrey Smith.<\/li>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-131\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bltprogs-300x166.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bltprogs-300x166.jpg 300w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bltprogs.jpg 453w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>In Feb-Mar 1981, I played the tramp and P.O. clerk in Checkhov&#8217;s &#8220;<b>The Cherry Orchard<\/b>&#8220;, directed by Patricia Plumb.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-194\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/inspectorpic2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"285\" \/>In July 1982, I played Eric Birling in J.B. Priestley&#8217;s &#8220;<b>An Inspector Calls<\/b>&#8220;, directed by Rachel Hodson.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>In August 1982, I played Snug, the lion, in Shakespeare&#8217;s &#8220;<b>Midsummer Night&#8217;s Dream<\/b>&#8220;, directed by Robert Dilks, at the Roundhouse, Tonbridge Wells, in the open air.<\/li>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-214 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/oliverpic-234x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/oliverpic-234x300.jpg 234w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/oliverpic.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 85vw, 234px\" \/>Back at the Little Theatre, in January 1984, I played Dr. Grimwig in Lionel Bart&#8217;s &#8220;<b>Oliver<\/b>&#8220;, directed by Robert Dilks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>In June 1984, I played Simon Bliss in Noel Coward&#8217;s &#8220;<b>Hay Fever<\/b>&#8220;,<\/li>\n<li>and in June 1985, I played Tristram, in Alan Ayckbourn&#8217;s &#8220;<b>Taking Sides<\/b>&#8221; directed by Don Dryden.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>The Dumb Waiter<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-144\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/dumbpic-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/dumbpic-203x300.jpg 203w, http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/dumbpic.jpg 204w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 85vw, 203px\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-145\" src=\"http:\/\/kreps.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/dumbprog.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"285\" height=\"289\" \/>In April 1984 I directed Harold Pinter&#8217;s &#8220;<em>The Dumb Waiter<\/em>&#8220;, at the Bromley Little Theatre, with two sixth formers in the cast. The next time I saw Dominic Mafham, (on the left) in 1990, he was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company!
